Notre Dame University issued a statement on Wednesday saying the school’s star linebacker and Heisman finalist Manti Te’o was a victim of a hoax relating to his apparent girlfriend who had reportedly died of leukemia.
The statement says a woman using the name Lennay Kekua duped both Te’o and his family by becoming close to them before leading them to believe she died of the disease. Notre Dame University says it is investigating the matter.
Earlier Wednesday afternoon, a Deadspin report suggested Te’o could have been complicit in the deception.
